Aquaculture Research

Advancing sustainable fish farming through innovative feed trials and alternative protein research

Research Overview

Fish feed trials is one of the Aquaculture Research activities conducted by our Aquaculture researchers in collaboration with our international partners. Aquaculture research is conducted at the SavaNet Agricultural Technology and Climate Change Research Centre in Loagri.

Some of these fish feed trials are aimed at developing alternative bio-based protein ingredient to reduce the high cost of fish meal which is a major ingredient in fish feed pellets production. Protein concentrates and press cake produced by our bio-refinery factory are used as alternative protein ingredient to produce fish feed pellets for bio-based fish feed trials. Research findings are regularly published in various international journals.

Aquaculture Research

Key Research Areas

Fish Feed Trials

Conducting comprehensive fish feed trials to optimize nutrition, growth rates, and health outcomes for various fish species in African aquaculture systems.

Alternative Proteins

Research on sustainable alternative protein sources including insect-based proteins, plant proteins, and agricultural by-products for fish feed formulations.

Sustainable Practices

Developing environmentally friendly aquaculture practices that minimize water usage, reduce waste, and promote ecosystem health.

International Publications

Research findings are published in international aquaculture and fisheries journals, contributing to global knowledge in sustainable fish farming.

Research Objectives

Feed Optimization

Develop cost-effective and nutritionally balanced fish feeds using locally available and sustainable ingredients.

Alternative Protein Development

Identify and test alternative protein sources that can reduce reliance on expensive fishmeal and promote circular economy principles.

Environmental Sustainability

Promote aquaculture practices that protect water resources and maintain ecological balance in farming systems.

Knowledge Sharing

Disseminate research findings through international publications and training programs for aquaculture practitioners.
